Rev. John Meyers, Sr. (1870-1951)
Founding Pastor

 

Rev. John Meyers, Sr. was born in 1870 in St. Helena Parish.  He was the son of Jerry and Charlotte Meyers. Between the late 1800s and the early 1900s, Rev. Meyers moved to East Feliciana Parish where he met and married his wife Sarah Green. The Meyers family moved to Lafourche Parish to seek better opportunities for their rapidly growing family.  After moving to Lafourche Parish, Rev. Meyers founded Nazareth Baptist Church in July 1920.  Rev. John Meyers passed away on August 14, 1951 at his home located at 2301 S. Claiborne Avenue.

 

Rev. James W. Young (1906-1995)
Rev. James W. Young was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, on July 9, 1906, and received a Bachelor of Theology degree from Union Baptist Theological Seminary in 1950. He was Pastor of the Second Nazareth Baptist Church in New Orleans from 1952-1994. He was a board member of the First District Missionary Association, Vice-President of the Christian Ministers Alliance, and a member of the national and state Baptists conventions. Rev. Young died in New Orleans on June 9, 1995
